Wow, do we really want to bring that kind of BIG business around our sacred amateur athletics. It’s already dangerously close and if you think college sports are corrupt now, just wait until the snakes that we already have running programs get a hold of some real dough to throw around!
Is it an Injustice that colleges and most everyone involved with college athletics makes money except the talent? In my opinion-NO. That would alter the entirety of college sports. They would no longer exist. The pay would revamp the entire system as we know it - something that would kill the intimacy that we now enjoy.
We have professional sports. If you don’t want to participate in the system, don’t! Do other students who generate revenue for the university get paid? NO.
Yes, colleges do take advantage of athletes. Coaches do take advantage the athletes. Turn around is fair play as they say- it’s time that athletes started taking advantage of the opportunity given to them. By all means, work your tail off and try to achieve that dream. Here’s the kicker- GRADUATE for the love of god. Learn the valuable lessons of balancing athletic and college life. Take the time to invest in yourself! Strengthen your value towards any company, community, city, our country!
Time and time again, we hear about how programs players and their coaches lie and cheat at any cost. When the smoke clears who are the real victims- innocent athletes, tuition paying students, devoted fans, the game. Guilty players usually end up with a guilty conscience, stripped accolades, and big pay checks(Hey Reggie!) Oh, did I mention supermodel girl friends. Coaches seem to get chance after chance after chance. They bounce around until their last scandal is forgotten and then they resurface across the country at another competitive university with a nice contract. While some Institutions have taken the high road clearly others still gamble heavily with the lure of winning.
This issue has only come up recently because of all the shady behavior and bad publicity in college sports.
People bringing up the fact that college players need to get paid is a way to disguise what is really going on. Let’s not get political here and try to apply the Band-aid. Can we do the right thing maybe? Address the problem at the root! The corruption, cheating, lying, that are becoming way too common in college sports, is criminal. So, let’s treat it that way!
The NCAA and its slap on the wrists- pathetic! Somehow they even seem to be able to uphold the constancy of the stock market. The NCAA is plain ole out-matched. The once good, wholesome kids and moral, honest coaches who started playing and coaching are now being swayed to compromise their basic human values. Bottom line- the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. Coaches, Players, Programs etc who engage in illegal activity should be dealt with accordingly. Maybe we can get back to the basics.

ReplyDeleteThe GAME!! Thank you for reminding us that as sports fans and athletes, we would be losing pure respect for SPORT by making college athletics about money. It's about the sweat and energy on the court, on the field, and in the ring that we need to uphold as valuable.
Dr. Jake,
ReplyDeleteThis is all fascinating, but what I really want to know is what are the chances of the White Sox winning the 2011 World Series. As an existentialist, I think the probability is 94.53%.
What do you think?

Well Said Bmccaffrey !
ReplyDelete@Reid:
White Sox have exactly 0% chance of winning the 2011 series btw.
This is all good, the point I would add to this is college athletes, at least the real talented ones who have a shot at doing anything beyond college, (who by the way are the ones who also are always involved in the scandals cause who cares about the backup LG on any team?) are already getting paid. They're getting scholarships! They're getting an education that everyone else has to pay for for free or at a reduced price, so everyone needs to stop crying and let them go through the process!!
ReplyDeleteVery nice IE83 !
